Alzheimer’s patients may finally have the breakthrough they’ve been waiting for! Researchers at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in San Diego have just discovered a gene linked to Alzheimer’s, and this could mean a cure is around the corner. In their study, they were able to observe that genes “mix and match” in a person’s brain during their lifetime, and one of these genes is linked to the disease. The manner in which these genes “mix and match” is similar to the way HIV spreads. Pharmaceutical companies have already figured out a way to stop the HIV “mix and match” genes from spreading, so the hope is that they can help stop Alzheimer’s disease in its tracks the same way.
