“Trump Administration Cuts The Size Of Fines For Health Violations In Nursing Homes”

Elder abuse is rampant in this country. That is a fact. According to the National Council on Aging, “Approximately 1 in 10 Americans aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse. Some estimates range as high as 5 million elders who are abused each year. One study estimated that only 1 in 14 cases of abuse are reported to authorities.”

This abuse often comes from someone the victim knows, such as family or a healthcare professional. Unfortunately, nursing homes are no exception. There are even particular fines, created by the federal government, to punish nursing homes for common health violations. The Trump Administration has made a change to the way these violations fine, going from a “per day” basis, under the Obama Administration to a “per instance” basis, today. This means that nursing homes can now ignore the violations for longer, without the fear of the fine increasing.

This highlights how incredibly complex and difficult long term healthcare can be for elders. The Medicaid application process itself is long and arduous, but taking into consideration all the other rampant issues that can come up can easily overwhelm an individual.
